Curriculum Night - February 9 - 6:30 p.m.
Mauldin High School's All Grades Curriculum Night will be held on February 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Parents of rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders and students are invited to attend. Come hear about the registration process and course offerings for the 2012-2013 school year. Department chairpersons and guidance counselors will be available to answer questions.

National School Counseling Week - February 6-10, 2012
School counselors are an integral part of the entire school community. National School Counseling Week, celebrated February 6-10, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Through collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and students, these professionals are actively engaged in helping students identify their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents. They focus on positive ways to enhance students' social, educational, and career development, and they work with teachers and other educators to provide resources and support so each student can realize his or her potential.

Boys Lacrosse Team Hosting Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday February 11th
Mauldin High will be hosting several teams from across the Upstate and Charleston area. First game begins at 10:00am.

Golden Strip Career Center Tours - February 13 & 14
To learn more about the course offerings at the Golden Strip Career Center, half of the tenth grade class will go on a field trip to the center on February 13, and the other half will go on February 14. All tenth graders are welcome to attend but it is not mandatory. Any tenth grader who does not want to attend this trip needs to sign the opt-out form in Guidance. Students must sign this form before Wednesday, February 8 if they do not want to go on this trip.

Laurens Electric Cooperative, Washington Youth Tour (For High School Juniors)
Current high school juniors may apply to compete for an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC and a $2500 scholarship. Students do not have to live in the service area of the Laurens Electric Cooperative and will be judged based on good citizenship and school and community involvement. The trip will take place June 16 - 21, 2012. To apply complete the application available on the Mauldin High School website and postmark by February 17.

5 Star Youth Alliance, INC Spring 2012 College Tour

The Purpose of the 5 Star Youth Alliance¡¦s spring 2012 college tours is to provide students with a guided tour of each campus. Students will have a chance to walk through academic, residential, athletic and administrative buildings. Additionally, the spring tour is a powerful educational experience that will motivate and encourage each student to improve their educational outcomes. The tour will open the doors of opportunity for our youth. In addition, each student will gain important insights regarding programs and majors at these colleges and universities that might help them choose their career path.

The tour also allows each students opportunities to display their leadership, creative and original thoughts, independence, initiative, intellectual ability, academic achievement, and oral expression of ideas to officials at each campus they visit.

This tour will cover visits to the following colleges & universities:

April 2nd - Morgan State University & Coppin State University

April 3rd - Bowie State University & Howard University

April 4th - Virginia State University & Virginia Union University

April 5th - Elizabeth City State University (time permitting Hampton University)

April 6th - Norfolk State University

In addition to the colleges & universities students will also have a chance to visit a few historical attractions like the:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial
  • The White House
  • The National Capital Building
  • The Lincoln Memorial
  • The Smithsonian Institute

At the conclusion of the tour we are sure each student will not only be excited and encouraged about attending college, but they will also be well prepared to make an informed decision about how to choose the college or university that best fits them.

Furman University's Multicultural Achievement Program for Juniors - 2/23/12

Service Learning is a unique opportunity open to juniors and seniors that enables students to serve in the community during the school day, as well as participate in service projects throughout the year. Job Shadowing - February 22-29
All 10th, 11th, and 12th graders can participate in Job Shadowing February 22-29. Students can shadow someone in a specific career for a whole day or half a day. This is an excused absence if the paper work is completed correctly and returned to Mrs. Jennifer Swift by the appropriate dates. The job shadow packet can be found on the website or in Guidance.

Carolina Academy for Educational Excellence

SAT One-Day Workshop for Critical Reading and Math Workshop Dates:

Saturday, March 3 for students taking the SAT on March 10
Saturday, April 28 for students taking the SAT on May 5
Saturday, May 19 for students taking the SAT on June 2

Our SAT One-Day Workshop is for students who do not have time to schedule a full or intensive prep before their test day.  The workshop is divided into two sections, Math and Critical Reading, where students will get a crash course in the SAT test structure and helpful hints for test day. Workshops are scheduled as follows:

9:00am-12:00pm - Critical Reading
12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch Break (students may bring lunch or go out to eat) 
1:00pm-4:00pm Math
Students attending the workshop must attend both AM and PM sessions.

During our SAT One-Day Workshop, students will learn tips for taking the SAT, strategies for answering Critical Reading and Math questions, take a full length practice test (omitting the Writing Sections), and review practice test questions and concepts, all with a trained Math and Critical Reading tutor.

Summer Programs

Claflin University Upward Bound Math and Science Program
Claflin University's Pursuing Rewards In Science and Mathematics (PRISM) program is accepting applications for students who are interested in pursuing careers related to science and math. The six-week residential program includes an intensified summer curriculum that increases the participants' knowledge base and enhances awareness of career opportunities in science and math. All participants will receive a weekly stipend, room and board, and round trip transportation to Claflin. Applications are available in guidance and are due March 7, 2012.

2012 Wells Fargo Business at Moore Summer (BAM) Program
This free week long summer residency program is designed to introduce students to a variety of business fields, experience campus life at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, and provide opportunities to earn a scholarship to USC. High achieving, current juniors/rising senior minority students may apply. The program is scheduled for June 16 ¡V 22, 2012. Applications are available in guidance and are due no later than March 16, 2012.

Furman University Emerging Public Leaders Program
This week long program is offered to a select group of rising high school seniors who want to get involved and make a difference in the world. Features include sessions with local, state, and national government leaders as well as members of the faculty of Furman¡¦s Department of Political Science. Students attend lectures, participate in off-campus field trips, and interact with speakers and faculty in small groups. Housed on the Furman campus, if selected, the cost of the program is free. Interested students should complete an application online at riley.furman.edu. Applications are due by April 2, 2012.

South Carolina Business Week

This premier program of the SC Chamber of Commerce provides students with a practical study of entrepreneurship and American private enterprise. Students form mock companies and compete to make their company the most profitable. Students who have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year during the spring of 2012 may apply to participate. All students who are accepted are given a scholarship to cover expenses except the $50 registration fee. The event is held the week of July 15-20 at Presbyterian College. Apply online at www.scbusinessweek.com. The application deadline is April 13, 2012.

SC Governor's School for Science and Math - Summer Program
The SC Governor's School for Science and Math will host a Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI). Rising high school seniors may participate in scientific research alongside experts June 11 - July 20, 2012. Interested students may visit www.scgssm.org/spri for additional information

Turn Your Unwanted Phones Into Cash for Our Athletes
Do you have any unwanted cell phones at home? Our athletes sure could put them to good use. Simply bring in the old phone, working or not working, and put it in the collection box in the school office. The MAVS Booster Club will then turn them over to an organization that will pay us from $1 to $10 for each cell phone donated. That organization then refurbishes the phones and gives them to charitable organizations. Your unwanted phones could help literally seed a field at Mauldin High this year so please collect and bring in your phones today. Phones will be collected during the rest of this year.

College Visits
Seniors may request three college days during an academic year. In order for a college day to count as a field trip, students must bring a note from a parent/guardian at least five days before the college visit to the MHS Attendance Office. In addition, you must bring, on the college/university letterhead, written proof of your visit to the institution the day you return to school to the attendance office. If you fail to follow this procedure exactly, your college visit will count as an unexcused absence.

College Application Process

  • Applications MUST be given directly to Mrs. Dalton Kelsey by the senior student.
  • Students should log in the application in the log book AFTER they have turned in the application. This log book is available in the reception area of the guidance office.
  • If Mrs. Kelsey is unavailable, students should wait until they can hand them personally to her. Students are asked not to give these to other guidance personnel.
  • Mrs. Kelsey does not accept applications from parents.
  • Students should submit completed applications to Mrs. Kelsey at least two weeks prior to the application deadline.

Reminder to Seniors About College Applications and Transcripts
All seniors who are applying to colleges and submitting their guidance counselor review to Mrs. Dalton Kelsey electronically; must still come by her office and request a transcript to be mailed to complete the application.

Salem College merit scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence & leadership. They will match the Life Scholarship. A student could receive $10,000 toward tuition if they currently hold a 3.5 GPA and have an 1100 on SAT or 24 on ACT.
Salem offers a Pre-Law and Pre-Med program that is connected to Wake Forest University.
A unique major at Salem is a 4 year BA in Non Profit Management.

James F. Byrnes Scholarship
Eligibility Requirements
: Student must have one or both parents deceased, be a South Carolina resident and US Citizen, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited 4-year college/university, satisfactory academic record, received their SAT/ACT score prior to submission, demonstrate excellence in character, ability, and enterprise to indicate that the student will make worthwhile contributions to society, and have financial need for college.
Amount: $3,250 Annually.

Greenville County Schools/PEPSI Golf Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements: Senior student enrolled in any GCS high school for the entire senior year, plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year post-secondary institution, a cumulative 3.0 or better GPA, ranked in 30th percentile of senior class, active in school and/or community activities, must not have received notification they will receive a scholarship of $5000 or more from another source by date winners are named (Palmetto and Life Scholarships are exempt), scholarship application must be submitted by the school.

The South Carolina Education Association-Retired administers the J.P. Coates/SCACT Scholarship as an ongoing activity of the Association.  *Recipient must be the child of a current employee of the Greenville Hospital System or the child or grandchild of an active GHS volunteer.
