Citizen With Gun Detains Robbery Suspect

Third robbery at same Mount Pleasant store in a week stopped by passerby with a gun.

A bystander armed with a gun held a suspected armed robber at bay following a hold-up at a Mount Pleasant convenience store Wednesday night, according to police.

The unidentified man saw the armed robbery unfold at the Kangaroo Express at Hwy. 17 and Hwy. 41 just before 7:30 p.m., police said. It was the third armed robbery at the store in less than 7 days, but this time a shot was fired.

When the man saw two suspected robbers flee the store, he produced his own weapon and held one of the suspects for police. Police have arrested and charged that individual with armed robbery. The second alleged robber fled the scene.

Police have not released the names of the suspects or the armed passerby, according to a statement from police spokesman Maj. Stan Gragg.

Wednesday's robbery had similarities to a Sunday robbery at the same store. In both hold-ups, two young black males entered the store with their faces covered, produced a gun and robbed the store of cash. A June 21 robbery at the same store involved a knife.

Police are still searching for the second suspect involved in Wednesday's robbery.  The Mount Pleasant Police Department is requesting anyone with information related to this incident to please contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 843-884-4176.
