Council Holding Yearly Retreat

Mount Pleasant Town Council will huddle for daylong planning session.

Mount Pleasant Town Council meets Tuesday in a daylong planning session meant to chart a direction for the rest of 2013.

The meeting is open to the public, but the council will meet at Rivertowne Country Club away from its normal chambers to set goals for the year ahead.

The council is expected to discuss capital improvements, changes to the town's healthcare structure and plans for a new town hall.

Three closed-door meetings are planned for Tuesday. Council will get legal advice in those meetings on changes in the town's business license rules, the docks at Shem Creek Park and on plans for the new town hall.

Mayor Billy Swails at last year's planning session indicated a need for a new town hall to replace the sprawling and aging municipal complex on Ann Edwards Lane. He proposed purchasing the Kmart shopping center at Johnnie Dodds Blvd. and Bowman Road, though the property is not currently for sale.

Tuesday's retreat gets underway at 8:30 a.m. and should wrap by 2 p.m., according to the agenda.
