Draft Beer on Tap at Area Gas Stations

Local Sunocos offer craft beer to go.

There has been plenty of pain at the gas pump lately, but 13 Sunoco stores in the region are offering something to help ease, well at least numb, the discomfort.

The national convenience store chain has expanded its popular craft beer exchange to the Lowcountry. The convenience stores will offer a handful of high-end beers on tap at select stores.

Customers can fill up on craft-brewed beer in special growlers and in six-pack bottles that are meant to be taken home for consumption.

The craft brew offerings have been a hit at New York Sunoco locations, and the chain thinks its next best bet is in the Lowcountry, according to a CNBC story.

"The Charleston market presents an excellent platform to expand the Craft Beer Exchange at APlus because of our current assets, market density in the region, excellent employees, and a local customer base that enjoys craft beer," Wendy Lyman, Sunoco's beverage category manager, told CNBC.

Store employees fill the growlers for customers, screw on a lid and then wrap the lid in tape to comply with South Carolina's open-container laws, according to a WCBD-TV story. The brews are not intended for consumption on-site or while the customer is behind the wheel, Sunco cautions.

Sunoco will typically offer 12 rotating selections of beer, according to CNBC. The to-go growlers can hold 64 ounces, and the stores also offer a six-pack option. Both sell for $9.99. The large growler bottles are refillable.
