Little League Volunteer Accused of Embezzlement

Sheriff: Youth baseball group was swindled out of $8,000 over two-year period.

The former treasurer of a youth baseball group has been charged with breach of trust after authorities say the woman embezzled nearly $8,400 from the group over a two-year period.

Tanya Garvin Howard, 35, is expected to surrender to police today and then face a Bond Court hearing on the charges, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.

Lowcountry Little League reported the alleged thefts in September 2012 after the organization elected new officers, according to an arrest warrant. After the election, Howard abruptly resigned, closed the league's checking accounts and handed over all the financial records and cash.

Later, an audit uncovered discrepancies between the organizations fundraising records and its checking account deposits, according to a report filed by the league.

Howard was the baseball group's treasurer for two years, and authorities believe she skimmed cash off deposits during that time period.
