Police: Man Charged in 2-Year-Old Child's Death

Police say man is responsible for toddler's homicide.

UPDATE (10 a.m. May 10): The Charleston County Coroner has identified the deceased child as Elijah Washington. The suspect is the child's mother's boyfriend.

The original story appears as follows:

Mount Pleasant Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for the death of a 2-year-old toddler who was brought in unresponsive to East Cooper Hospital back in March.

The youngster sustained "severe abdominal injuries as a result of blunt-force trauma," according to police spokesman Maj. Stan Gragg.

Bryan Okeith Seabrook has been charged with homicide by child abuse. Police say he brought the child to the emergency room around 7 p.m. March 19.

Seabrook told police he found the toddler unconscious in bed with his sisters shortly before taking the child to the hospital, according to a police report. The child's mother was in North Charleston at the time of the incident.

Seabrook is not the deceased child's father, but it's not clear, based on police reports, how he is connected to the child.

Authorities removed the remaining children from the home pending a Family Court hearing. This isn't the first time the family has come under scruitiny by the South Carolina Department of Social Services. The police report indicates a previous investigation resulted in the toddler's biological father being denied visitation until he completed required Family Court courses.

At the hospital, the child's mother collapsed in a hospital doorway upon being told that her child was dead. She initially spoke to investigators, but then her attorney asked to provide no further statements to authorities.

Seabrook has a bond court hearing today.
