A man who might have been stealing a refrigerator from a Lowe's loading dock was apparently driving a stolen truck, according to a police report.
Mount Pleasant police arrested James Jerome Clare Boykin on possession of a stolen vehicle after being called to Lowe's when a concerned citizen spotted the man loading a fridge into his truck.
Lowe's management said the man did not have permission to take the used appliance, but the store expressed no interest in pressing charges.
Boykin said the truck, which also had stolen license plates, was loaned to him by a friend currently incarcerated in the county jail.
Boykin might have met up with his friend when Mount Pleasant officers placed him in the same facility for the stolen property charges.
Woman Jumps Curb, Damages Car
A James Island woman told police she got confused while trying to exit the parking lot at the Palms Retirement Home.
When she couldn't find the exit, she decided to jump the curb onto Bowman Road, according to a police report.
When her Lexus SUV began making rattling noises, Phyliss Kalisky-Mair, 52, called police so she could report the apparent exhaust damage to her insurance company.
Police didn't issue any citations for the incident.
Popped Basketball Locks Down Three Schools
Three Mount Pleasant schools were placed on lock down after someone ran over a basketball in a back parking lot at Laurel Hill Elementary School.
School officials thought the loud noise was a gunshot, according to a police report. That triggered an immediate lockdown at Laurel Hill. Nearby Cario Middle and Charles Pinckney Elementary schools followed suit.
When police recovered the basketball, all the schools were returned to normal status.
Man Accused of Swindling Leaves Big Clue
A man accused of swindling cash from a handful of local grocery stores used his preferred customer card before carrying out the fraudulent charges, police said.
The Charleston man was caught on video pretending to pay for purchases at several Harris Teeter self check out kiosks in Mount Pleasant.
The purchases, for small-dollar items such as soda, cost just a few dollars, but police allege the man would pretend that the kiosks didn't return him his proper change.
A cashier would then issue the change, and the man would leave the store with both he merchandise and the cash.
Police discovered the man's identity pretty quickly because he used his Harris Teeter VIC Card. Those cards contained the man's name, address and telephone number.
The report doesn't say whether the suspect has been charged yet.
