River Bowl Re-Opens as Sparians

New management, new name, same owners for Johnnie Dodds Bowling alley.

Sparians River Bowl officially re-opens this week with a new name, new management and a host of nightly specials to celebrate the re-branding.

The Johnnie Dodds Boulevard bowling alley hasn't changed owners. Randy and Laurie Bates, the Mount Pleasant couple who purchased the facility two years ago, continue to own the alley. Sparians, which operates an alley in Raleigh, N.C., will handle the day-to-day management.

"We're having a grand opening this week, but it's really more of a chance for us to introduce ourselves with a new brand, since the owners haven't changed," said Michaela Cooper, the facility's sales manager.

Previously a dark and unwelcoming bowling alley, the Bateses went on a two-year, large-scale remodeling effort. The facility is now modern with stylish furnishings, up-to-date arcade offerings and a full-scale bar and food menu.

"We really want to appeal to a wide variety of individuals," Cooper said. "Families, young professionals and seasoned bowlers will all find something to like about Sparians."

The facility is seeing growing popularity among groups who like the bowling alley's large event space. It can accommodate parties as small as 12 up to 350, Cooper said.

"It's a great option for groups that want food, drinks and entertainment all in one spot," she said.
