Sheriff to Address Minority Drug Arrest Report

Local NAACP president blasts sheriff on alleged drug arrest bias.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon today will address concerns raised by a recent ACLU report that finds blacks are arrested in Charleston County on marijuana possession charges 3.2 times more than whites.

The local NAACP president said at a Monday press conference that the study proves there is active racial profiling in Charleston County, according to Live5News. Cannon has reportedly dismissed the study as biased.

"It's a big problem," said NAACP President Dot Scott. "It's not just 'OK, we found this person smoking weed,' there are issues bigger than that."

The study notes that in 2010 South Carolina arrested blacks 2.8 times more than whites for marijuana charges and spent $49 million on marijuana enforcement, according to the Post and Courier.

Cannon will address the report at a 3 p.m. press conference at the the Sheriff's Office Headquarters in North Charleston.
