Surgeon Reports $1.5M Fraud

Police reports: Plastic surgeon says office manager committed serious theft.

Mount Pleasant police are investigating allegations made by a plastic surgeon that his former office manager embezzled $1.5 million over a five-year period.

Dr. Thomas Funcik, owner of Coastal Facial Plastic Surgery, made the report Friday and turned over a handful of documents, including forged checks, that he alleges proves that his former employee swindled from his business, according to a police incident report.

He started to notice the improprieties when suspicious credit card charges showed up on his business account, the report states. Through his own investigation, the surgeon found forged checks, fraudulent wire transfers, missed payroll deposits, stolen checks and business credit cards opened in both the employee's and the business's name without his consent.

All told, Dr. Funcik says the employee took $1.5 million dollars during the individual's employment. The surgeon says the employee roughly doubled their pay over the course of their employment, the report states.

Police have turned the case over to its investigative division. The suspect is not named here, since the individual has not been formally charged.
