Update: No Arrests in IOP Standoff

Charleston County Sheriff's deputies swarmed a hotel room in the search for a man with warrants this morning, but no arrests were made.

The sheriff's SWAT team around noon stormed a hotel room at the Palms Hotel on Isle of Palms, but apparently the wanted individual was not in the room, authorities said.

Isle of Palms police were attempting to serve a warrant this morning on Justin Ainsworth, 31, of Columbia, according to reports. The man was apparently stopped on Wednesday and fled the scene of a traffic stop. Police later learned he was wanted for "banking" crimes in Horry County and in Georgia.

Officials at the Horry County Sheriff's Office told Patch they could not discuss the warrants until they are served.

Isle of Palms Police this morning contacted the sheriff for help arresting the man, said Major James Brady, the sheriff's spokesman. Hotel guests were evacuated and businesses nearby were blocked from entering their workplaces.

The sheriff's office dispatched its SWAT team and negotiators to the scene. Ocean Boulevard at Palms Drive was closed as the deputies prepared to swarm the suspect's third-floor hotel room. A large crowd of spectators gathered on the streets to watch police.
