Teen Dies After Sullivan's Island Rescue

Three swimmers rescued; One dies later at hospital.

A swimmer died Tuesday after been rescued while swimming near Breach Inlet on Sullivan's Island.

Rescue workers pulled three youths from the water near Station 28 Tuesday afternoon, according to Live5News. But one of the teenagers later died, according to the Charleston County Coroner.

Four teens were swimming in the ocean shortly before the incident, according to ABC News 4. One of the teens got out of the water to check his cellphone, but when he turned around, he did not see his three friends. After searching the beach, he called 911 and crews responded.

The emergency scene is just a few blocks from Breach Inlet, which is notorious for rip currents and rough water, according to WCBD-TV. Swimming nor wading is allowed in that area. There was a moderate risk for rip currents Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the water was very choppy at the time of the incident. One of the victims was given CPR on the beach by emergency workers before being transported to the hospital.

Authorities have not released the names of any of the victims involved in the incident, but WCBD-TV identifies three of the individuals as males.
