Today is 12-12-12

It's the last repeating day of the century. Here's what makes it special.

Today is 12-12-12, and unless a lot changes about human life expectancy, this will likely be the last repeating day of your lifetime. We won't see another repeating day on the calendar until January 1, 2101.

Like July 2, 2007 and Nov. 11, 2011, the date is spawning mass weddings across the country. And there's a 12/12/12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert planned for tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York. Bon Jovi and a slew of other huge names will perform.

So here are a few tidbits about the big day:

Math nerds, do not rejoice: Die-hard fans of 12 will not party down until 2016, because they count in base 12. I majored in journalism specifically to avoid such mathematic questions, so I cannot elaborate here. I defer to USA Today.

The world is still here: Today is not the ominous end to the Mayan calendar (or is it?). By most interpretations, that's 12-21-12, so if you woke up feeling some relief, get back to panicking. We've still got 9 days until Mexican Armageddon.

Hal and Oates: So it's not Bon Jovi, but Hal and Oates are still fairly awesome. They'll perform tonight at the North Charleston Coliseum. Tickets are still available.

Want to get married today? There's bad news. Lots of folks plan to tie the knot today, but unless you did some planning, there's bad news. There's a 24-hour waiting period on new wedding licenses in South Carolina, so if you're a procrastinator, your wedding license won't actually read 12-12-12. Somehow, 12-13-12 doesn't have the same ring, eh?

Feeling lucky? The Powerball jackpot is up to $50 million after a record jackpot a few weeks ago. There's a drawing tonight at 11 p.m. Want to really make it lucky? Buy your ticket at 12:12 p.m. If you win, please treat me to lunch as a thank you.

This kid has a story forever: This kid has a great ice-breaker story for the rest of his life. He's turning 12 today. Lucky him.

Observe some Lucky 12 real estate: If you live at 12 12th Street, count yourself lucky. There are 12th streets on Isle of Palms, in downtown Charleston, in Hanahan and on Folly Beach. (Work with me here. I'm trying.)

Palindrome lovers: If you're a fan of palindromes, you shoulda been awake at 1:21:02 a.m. That's when the date and time read the same backwards as it did forward: 2012-12-12 1:21:02. You'll get a less-impressive chance at 12:12 p.m. when the calendar and clock will read 12/12/12 12:12:12.

Get your shopping done: And if you're not done with your Christmas shopping, here's another warning. On Twitter, @Jin_Campbell wrote: "Tomorrow At 12 mins,12 secs after 12 o' clock on Dec 12th, the time will be 12:12:12,12/12/12 & 12 days before Christmas."
