Utility Truck Falls Off of I-26 Overpass

Two people have been hospitalized.

An SCE&G utility truck fell from the Interstate 26 overpass leading from the Ravenel Bridge Tuesday afternoon, injuring two workers.

Police say the truck was being escorted from the bridge by a marked cruiser when the retractable boom struck an overpass sign. The collision caused the truck to tumble from the overpass. It landed between the overpass and the E. Bay Street off-ramp.

The workers were alert and talking when emergency help arrived, said police spokesman Charles Francis. Police were told the men suffered non life-threatening injuries and were being treated at MUSC, Francis said.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. Earlier in the day a power line fell on an off-ramp on the bridge causing traffic to be halted on the entire span for roughly 20 minutes. Francis said he was unsure if the later accident was connected with the repair work from earlier in the day.
