School called out for strong science and engineering curriculum.

Wando High School is getting national attention for its rigorous science and engineering curriculum.

On Friday, officials with Project Lead The Way, the nation’s leading provider of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics curriculum, will designate the East Cooper high school one of 16 model high schools in the nation.

“Since joining the PLTW network, Wando High School has been a pacesetter in STEM education,” said PLTW Southeast Regional Director Gail Parsons. “The administration, faculty, and students of Wando High School continue to set a high standard for PLTW programs.”

More than 4,000 schools across the country were eligible for the award, according to the Charleston County School System. Wando was recognized because of its strong Biomedical Sciences and a Pathways To Engineering programs.

“Through the BMS and PTE programs, Wando High School provides its students with hands-on STEM curriculum that inspires them, unlocks their potential, and prepares them for the competitive, 21st Century global marketplace,” according to a school system news release.

Model schools were selected based on their strength in several key categories, including a robust program implementation, excellent post-secondary relationships, outstanding communications and outreach, solid professional development and a strong level of student engagement.

Officials with Project Lead the Way will be at the school for a Friday morning plaque presentation. School leaders and members of the business community who supported the STEM curriculum will attend.
