Waterworks Considers Rate Increase

Funds for repair work will add $1 to monthly bill.

Mount Pleasant Waterworks meets today to discuss a rate increase of 7.5 percent.

The additional funds are needed to fund repairs to the town's aging water system. If approved, the rate hike would go into place June 30, 2013.

The rate increase will hit consumers at roughly $4 per household, but at the same time as the increase, a $3 fee that was being added for repair work associated with the U.S. Hwy. 17 construction will expire, according to a Waterworks news release.

That means Waterworks customers will only see a $1 increase in their bills, if the rate increase is approved.

Waterworks plans two hearings on the rate increase. The first is set for 5 p.m. today at the Waterworks headquarters on Rifle Range Road. A second hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. June 3 at the same location.
