Police: Bloody Fight Yields Assault Charges Against Two Men

Fight between domestic partners sends one to the hospital.

Two men have been charged with second-degree assault and battery after a bloody fight that sent one of the men to the hospital, a Simpsonville Police report said.

Charged were Christopher David Smith, 26, of 713 E. Curtis Street, and Brian Terry Kelly, 23, of 1034 Cooper Bridge Road in Woodruff.

When police arrived at Smith's apartment, officers said they could hear yelling and the sounds of someone being slapped and stuff being moved around the apartment, the report said.

It took officers several attempts to get the men to answer the door. When they did, they found Smith wrapped completely in a blanket "with a large amount of blood on his face," the report said. When police asked Smith to remove the blanket, the officers said they noticed his entire body covered in blood and a cut on the left side of his neck at the jawbone, the report said.

Smith told officers no one else was home, but Kelly was eventually discovered after officers followed a trail of blood that led to the bathroom, the report said. Kelly walked out of the bathroom, also covered in blood, the report said. "He also had a deep cut on his face just beside his eyebrow, and on the left jawbone. Both of these cuts were pouring blood," the report said.

Smith told officers that the two men, who had been in a relationship for the past three years, got into an argument after Kelly allegedly stole a can of Dust Off, which can be used as an inhalant, the report said. Smith said Kelly had been huffing the can and began yelling at him when the fight started, the report said.

Then, Smith alleged, Kelly grabbed a steak knife and came up behind him and held the knife to his neck, the report said. Smith then grabbed a glass and hit Kelly in the face in an attempt to free himself, the report said.

EMS and first responders arrived on the scene following the police. Smith refused treatment and was placed under arrest, while Kelly was transported to Hillcrest Hospital and later arrested and charged after his release, the report said.
