Police: Hacker Hits Simpsonville Man's Bank Account

Money allegedly stolen when direct-deposit paycheck is fraudulently rerouted to another account.

A Simpsonville man alleged in a police report that someone hacked his identity and recently stole all the funds from his direct-deposit paycheck.

The man, a member of the S.C. Air National Guard, said someone hacked into his checking account and diverted his $1,391.99 direct-deposit paycheck into another account based in South Dakota, the report said.

The alleged fraud, discovered by the man's wife when she contacted the National Guard, is still under investigation by Simpsonville Police.

Bank account hacking is a growing concern in the financial services industry, with millions of dollars stolen each year. Earlier this year, for example, McAfee Labs, a company that deals with internet security from malware and hackers, reported it had uncovered a plot called "Project Blitzkreig" to steal money from customers at major American banks this year.

While there are plenty of resources online that provide tips and tactics on how to avoid such cyber crime, amazingly tips on how to steal are readily available, too, with only a simple Google search. One such brazen example can be found here.
