Simpsonville Man Charged with Assaulting Girlfriend, Child

Randy Lee Cox accused of allegedly throwing couple's child against the wall in attack, police say.

A Simpsonville man faces charges after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend and their child, according to a Simpsonville Police incident report.

Randy Lee Cox, Jr., 36, of 104 Beattie St., has been charged with second-offense criminal domestic violence and unlawful conduct towards a child in the alleged attack, which occurred June 18, the report said.

According to the female victim, Cox reportedly was drunk when she returned home from work. Later that evening, Cox allegedly began verbally assaulting his girlfriend, calling her "a no good liar and no good mother," the report said.

When their young son told Cox to stop yelling at his mother, Cox is alleged to have picked the boy up and hurled him five to six feet across the room, where the child struck a wall and fell on his bed, the report said.

Cox then allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the throat, choking her, and continued to yell at her, the report said. The victim said she also was struck in the back with a broom by Cox's grandmother, breaking the broom handle, though she was unsure if the woman meant to strike her or Cox, the report said. Cox eventually released his grip on the victim's throat, then threw her to the ground, the report said.

The victims were subsequently able to flee the residence and seek shelter at the woman's place of employment, the report said.

Cox admitted to choking and pushing his girlfriend due to her "fighting with his Granny," the report stated. However, he denied ever throwing the child against the wall, the report said.

The female victim gave police hospital discharge papers from Hillcrest Memorial indicating she received whiplash in the alleged attack and that their son sustained bruises to his back, the report said.

Cox remained in the Greenville County Detention Center as of Saturday morning in lieu of $25,000 bond, according to online jail records.
