Heritage Square Developer: What Should Go Here, Summerville?
Developer seeking community input; post a comment here!

The developer of Heritage Square has two priorities: cleanup the condemned property — bringing it up to code — and asking the Summerville community what it'd like to see at the corner of Highway 78 and Berlin G. Myers.Â
Julian Wilson, director of facilities for 338 Magnum LLC, said drivers-by will start to see the property transform in the next few weeks. The property will be secured and the roof containing asbestos will be removed, he said.Â
"I'm going to go ahead and solve the problems," Wilson said.Â
Wilson added that more details on his company's plans for the property and the nearby apartment complex will be released mid October.Â
There will be about 50,000 square feet of retail space available at the shopping center.Â
"What would you like in this center?" Wilson asked.
Summerville Patch has asked readers to tell us what you'd like to see at Heritage Square in the past. Here are some of the previous suggestions:
- "I'd like to see a higher-end grocery store in Summerville, something like Whole Foods or Earthfare, I know a lot of people who drive to Mt Pleasant or Charleston."
- "I would love to see Hobby Lobby go in there. I hate having to drive out on Rivers to get my yarn."
- "Fine arts performing center large enough to host major events and business conventions."
- "How about a library? The one on Trolley Road needs more parking spaces."
- "smart housing (utilizing natural light, solar water heating, solar power, small square footage that uses space wisely, rooftop gardening, etc) mixed with smart retail."
- "Barnes & Noble, Trader Joes, A good Sushi place, Any good grocery store..Harris Teeter? One thing we don't need is another chain restaurant or Sam's Club or Costco in my opinion. We have a super Walmart right around the corner. Summerville is a great town with a lot of potential..I drive to West Ashley & Mount Pleasant for the shopping I want.. I'd rather keep the money in Summerville."
- "A Whole Foods with local stores/restaurants flanking it would make me happy."
- "I would like to see a youth center here. Training and teaching teens, as well as a place for them to go and have fun. Teaming up with the city to get the teens off the streets, and giving them a purpose."
