Summerville's Sweet Tea Trail Launching Soon

The 2013 LEADERSHIP DORCHESTER Class of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce will officially launch the Sweet Tea Trail on Tuesday, October 8, 2013at Hutchinson Square located at South Main Street in Summerville.

The launch, being held from 11am to 1pm, will kick off with a ribbon cutting at11:30am. A Sweet Tea Bar offering different types of tea will be available along with other goodies and refreshments. Attendees can play a game of cornhole, along with other games, and will hear how sweet tea came to be by Professional Storyteller Tim Lowry. Remarks will be made by the Town of Summerville Mayor Bill Collins and the Director of S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Duane Parrish. The “Sweet Tea” Trolley will also be present for guests to see.

After much research, Summerville lays claim to the fact it is the “Birthplace of Sweet Tea,” and with this new distinction comes new adventures, like the Sweet Tea Trail. The 2013 LEADERSHIP DORCHESTER Class decided in April to help promote the Sweet Tea Trail as their annual project. The class has been a catalyst for bringing the trolley to Summerville along with fundraising to have banners placed along the Sweet Tea Trail in order to lead tourists deeper into our community and help them discover the richness that lies within.

The trail was designed to help visitors and locals alike explore the wonderment of Summerville. The goal of the Sweet Tea Trail is to guide folks from the I-26 interchange at exit 199 through the five districts of the town, offering uniquely Southern dining, shopping, historical and cultural experiences. Starting with the shops and restaurants at Azalea Square, the trail continues to historic downtown Summerville. From there, the trail visits the storied Azalea Park and continues to Colonial Dorchester State Park, concluding with the scenic Plantation District, Middleton Place, Magnolia Gardens and Drayton Hall Plantation.
