The ARK Receives $40,000 Grant for Outreach Help
Lutheran organization aids Summerville Alzheimer's nonprofit.

A local nonprofit that helps families dealing with Alzheimerβs disease has been awarded a $40,000 grant by a national Lutheran affiliated organization, Wheat Ridge Ministries. The check will be presented at The ARK on Wednesday, February 6.
The ARK, Alzheimerβs Family Support Services will receive the $40,000 grant over three years to fund its groundbreaking NOAH Project.

βNOAH stands for Neighborhood Outreach Alzheimerβs Help,β explained Peg Lahmeyer, executive director. βWe started this project to help communities develop programs that meet the needs of families dealing with Alzheimerβs and other dementia.β
Through the NOAH Project, The ARK mentors rural and other underserved communities throughout the Lowcountry and beyond. Assistance includes determining needs, resources, and much more.

The ARK leveraged a combination of state, foundations, and donor funds to attract the national award. Estimates are that 80,000 people in South Carolina have Alzheimerβs disease, with a projection of 125,000 by 2025.Β
Wheat Ridge Ministries is a nonprofit organization that helps a variety of health and human care initiatives get off the ground by providing the initial funding and support they need to thrive. Their efforts focus on improving the health of the whole person by addressing wellness of body, mind, and spirit. The ARK is a community outreach of St. Lukeβs Lutheran Church. For 17 years, The ARK has provided hope and relief to families dealing with Alzheimerβs. The ARKβs non-sectarian programs and support services include Respite Care, Support Groups, Caregiver Consultation, Education, Resource Referrals, Corporate Caregiver Program, Speakers Bureau and NOAH Project.Β
