  1. Author Jay Sheridan and photographer Robin Hood have released their collaborative "Historic Franklin: Along the Harpeth," detailing the history of Franklin, Tennessee, from its founding in 1799 through to the present day. Quote Tennessee preservationist Rod Heller, who helped to fund the research needed to write the book: "What began as a small project to commemorate the opening of the Harpeth Hotel quickly developed into a larger effort to produce a book that captured the milestones of Franklin's full history. We are proud not only to contribute the book to the community, but to use the proceeds toward the larger purpose of the preservation of open spaces. Our level of success in that realm will define Franklin's future for generations to come." (williamsonherald.com)
  2. Jamonte Calvin Smith, 31, ordered a chicken sandwich on Wednesday, May 31, at a Nashville McDonald's, before attempting a robbery of the same McDonald's location he patronized. Police responded to the McDonald's at 311 Harding Place to investigate the robbery β€” per the manager, Smith ordered a chicken sandwich and tried to pay with cash, but when the register drawer was opened Smith is alleged to have lunged over the counter for the money in the drawer, with a struggle ensuing between Smith and the manager. According to witnesses, Smith later fled the restaurant after taking off his shirt, before returning to the same McDonald's later that day, leading to his arrest. He has been charged with attempted robbery and aggravated burglary, among other offenses, and is jailed on a roughly $55,000 bond. (WSMV 4)
  3. Williamson County's African American Heritage Society event on Friday, Jun. 2, featured Katie White, a Williamson native and educator who has authored "Bits and Pieces, a Memoir." White was the second of nine children born to a sharecropper and tenant farmer and his wife in Williamson County near Franklin and graduated at 16 from Franklin Training School with valedictory honors. Among her other accomplishments, White received a Ph.D, and served as a professor at Tennessee State University. (williamsonherald.com)
