Here are the top four stories in Franklin today:
- Earlier this week, a house fire occurred at a two-story home on Glastonbury Drive. The fire happened as a result of a resident who left some oil heating on the stovetop unattended. Upon hearing pops, they returned to the kitchen to heavy smoke and an active fire. After failed attempts to extinguish the fire, the occupants exited the home and called 911. The incident was quickly resolved by the fire department and no one was injured. (Press Release Desk)
- The Williamson County Sheriff's Office has reported an increase in scam calls. Lately, scammers have been increasing their efforts in attempts to steal victims' money and identities. The Sheriff's Office warns that they will never call for money — be careful screening what is real and what is fake. (Williamson Source)
- Nashville will be implementing a new strategy, which has been used in cities like Detroit and Chicago, to combat violent crimes in the city. Across the city, Group Violence Intervention (GVI) has been introduced to encourage police, non-profits, and social services to collaborate and target small percentages of the population that are responsible for half the homicides in cities. “That small group put a lot of fear in a lot of people but if we can reach that small group, that small group could be what changes our city,” Community Safety Director Ron Johnson said. (WSMV 4)
- Franklin Mayor Ken Moore made a proclamation honoring the late veteran Sam Gant, a Korean War veteran and a community leader who passed on Jan. 19. Gant began his military career as a member of the Air Force, focusing on aircraft and engine mechanics before becoming a technical instructor and assistant phase supervisor in jet engine mechanics at Sheppard Air Force Base. Also serving as a member of Franklin's Civil War Historical Commission, the Battlefield Task Force, and Save the Franklin Battlefield, Gant led an initiative honoring the discovered remains of a Civil War soldier.
