ETSU grad has 'emotional' online graduation from war-torn Ukraine (knoxnews.com) — An East Tennessee State University graduate who once studied in Johnson City completed his Appalachian studies master’s degree online from war-torn Ukraine, joining ETSU’s Dec. 18 ceremony via Zoom. He credits his time in Johnson City with deepening his understanding of mountain cultures, and now uses that knowledge in his work as a war journalist and museum director preserving Ukrainian regional identity.

3. WCSO: Duo charged with assault, vandalized Christmas decorations (wjhl.com) — A Johnson City woman and an Elizabethton man face aggravated assault charges after deputies say Christmas decorations were vandalized and a gun was pointed at a Washington County homeowner. The pair were arrested Wednesday near Highway 11-E, with additional charges for one suspect, and both are scheduled for a court appearance Friday following their booking into the county detention center.

Tennessee's 'Savanna's Law' domestic violence registry will list repeat offenders (wjhl.com) — A new Tennessee law called Savanna’s Law, reported from Johnson City, will create a public registry of repeat domestic violence offenders starting Jan. 1, 2026. Local advocates say the registry could empower survivors and prevent abuse, but some worry offenders aren’t listed until a second conviction and stress the need for better support and intervention.
