Six String, Eighth Commandment: Thief Steals Guitars From Smyrna Church

Two guitars were stolen from a Smyrna church last week and the thief even tried to pry open the prayer request box, for some reason.

SMYRNA, TN — It's an old saw that the most stolen book in the world is The Bible, though maybe folks pilfering the Good Book need to read it in any event, especially the part in Exodus about "Thou shalt not steal."

A man who broke into Smyrna's True Vine Free Will Baptist Church September 16 might have done well to grab a copy on his way out the door, except that his hands were full.

The church's pastor, Charlie Wright, told News 2 that the surveillance system at the church captured video of a man stealing two guitars used in Sunday worship, including a Les Paul donated directly to the congregation by Gibson about 12 years ago.

Bizarrely, footage also shows that the man tried to pry open the church's prayer request box, for reasons that, like the peace of God, passeth all understanding.

Smyrna police are investigating the theft and Wright told News 2 he might just preach a sermon on the Eighth Commandment.
