Smyrna Candy Bar Scammer Stealing Bank Info: Police

Smyrna Police say a man claiming to be selling $1 candy bars to raise money for an autism charity is stealing bank information.

SMYRNA, TN -- Smyrna Police say a man is running a candy-bar-based credit card scam, stealing bank information from good-hearted donors.

"Please be on the lookout for a white male ... going into different stores claiming to be selling $1.00 candy bars for children. We have only had complaints from clerks at this time. The suspect will scan your debit/credit card and sell your information," the department posted on Facebook.

Some of the man's alleged victims told WKRN that he told them they could pay cash or run their cards with a device on his cell phone.

“Not only did he process for the candy bars, he decided to take an all-out excursion down Google Play,” Wendy Odom told the station. “So about $150 later, that was what my donation to children with autism resulted in.”

The suspect is a white man, who is between 30 and 40-years old. He is around 5 feet 7 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a red baseball cap with “LSW” on it and a plaid jacket with a vest.
