• Crews still battle Carter Co. Landfill fire despite cold's challenges (wjhl.com) — Because the Carter County Landfill remains closed after a multi-day fire, Roan Mountain residents are being directed to take only bagged household trash to the convenience center at 102 Old Rock Quarry Road, open daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week. Officials say crews are still working around the clock to control the fire, and vulnerable residents should limit outdoor activity when smoke is present.
