Washington, D.C. — Supporters and opponents of a controversial Texas abortion law both demonstrated outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday as the court listened to oral arguments regarding a Texas law that bans nearly all abortions in the state.

The Supreme Court considered whether to block the Texas anti-abortion law on its own. Instead, the Supreme Court signaled it would would allow abortion providers to pursue a court challenge of the Texas law.

A provision in the law considered controversial allows Texas to deputize private citizens to sue anyone who performs or aids or assists with an abortion. The deputized citizen could be awarded $10,000 if the lawsuit is successful.
