Texas Voter Rolls Increase Ahead Of Rowdy Midterm Elections

Elections officials believe Texans are coming more engaged in the voting process.

HOUSTON, TX — The Texas voter registration rolls are exploding ahead of the November midterm elections. According to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office, Texas set a record for voter registration with 15.6 million registered voters since the last midterm election.

Since the 2014 midterms the state’s voter registration rolls have added 1.6 million voters, according to a Houston Chronicle report. The increases have occurred in the state’s largest counties of Bexar, Harris, Dallas and Tarrant, officials said.

While the increases are not directly linked to the upcoming midterm election, Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos said county elections officials have reported an excitement among midterm voters, particularly in the senate race between Republican incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke.

Pablos added that these levels of voter enthusiasm are only usually evident during presidential election cycles and that Texas voters are becoming more engaged in the election process. Texas residents have until Oct. 9 to register to vote in the Nov. 6 midterm election.
