📰 News we're reading

1. Texas Education Agency taking over Lake Worth, Connally and Beaumont school districts (texasstandard.org) — Beaumont ISD is facing a potential second state takeover after years of failing grades at multiple campuses, including ML King Middle School and Fehl-Price Elementary. The Texas Education Agency cites long-term unacceptable ratings and low grade-level performance, while local leaders question why the entire district must be taken over instead of closing or restructuring specific schools.

2. Beaumont man identified as man police say died after firing shots at officers following pursuit into Beaumont from Port Arthur on Friday (12newsnow.com) — Beaumont police have identified the 46-year-old Beaumont man who died after allegedly firing at officers near the Seventh Street overpass following a pursuit that began in Port Arthur. The Friday morning shootout shut down a busy I-10 service road area, left nearby workers ducking for cover, and triggered a Texas Rangers investigation and administrative leave for two involved officers.

3. A century of giving: How the Empty Stocking Fund has evolved (beaumontenterprise.com) — Beaumont’s historic Empty Stocking Fund, now run by The Beaumont Enterprise, is in the middle of this year’s campaign to provide Christmas toys for local children. Started in 1914 as the Beaumont Journal’s Milk and Ice Fund, it has raised over $2 million and now accepts donations by mail, online, and in person, while also supporting the Southeast Texas Food Bank.

4. Beaumont City Council to hold public hearing on censuring two members over fire chief dispute (12newsnow.com) — Beaumont City Council is holding a public hearing today on whether to censure Councilmembers Mike Williams and Joey Hilliard over their push to remove the city’s fire chief and assistant chief. The dispute centers on alleged City Charter violations, years of claimed mismanagement in the fire department, and a new cadet program that drew hundreds of applicants, sharply dividing city leaders.

5. Beaumont shelters open doors as temperatures plummet (kfdm.com) — With temperatures in Beaumont dropping into the mid-30s after a freezing night, local shelters like Henry’s Place and Warm Hands Warm Hearts Church are opening overflow space for people experiencing homelessness. Families with children and pets are welcome at the church, but not at Henry’s Place, and organizers are urgently asking for donations as supplies run low heading into the winter.
