Here are the top three stories today in Cedar Park-Leander:

  1. On Apr. 5, Williamson County Government issued a burn ban for the next 90 days, prohibiting the burning of any combustible material outside. If a person knowingly or intentionally violates this order, they can be fined up to $500. (Press Release Desk)
  2. For the May 7 election, six candidates are running for three places on the Cedar Park City Council. Mel Kirkland is running for a third term in Place 2 against Collin Klein. Council Member Dorian Chavez is running for Place 4 against incumbent Eric Boyce. And Heather Jefts, who has served two terms in Place 5 and 6, is running for Place 6 against former Council Member Tim Kelly. (Austin American-Statesman)
  3. Five districts in Travis County, including Leander ISD, failed the property valuation study in 2021. School districts collect taxes based on the value of property in the district, which the local district calculates. The Texas comptroller also conducts a property value study to make sure the local district's number is within five percent of the comptroller's number. The districts were found "invalid" for the 2021 tax year due to an over five percent difference in property valuations between the local district and the state comptroller.
