CEDAR PARK, TX — Artwork created by local preschoolers is out of this world — literally.

Over the past month, children attending The Goddard School created artwork that will be on board a shuttle to be launched by Cedar Park-based Firefly Aerospace Inc., a commercial space launch company that plans to launch its first ever mission to space in 2020.

Children worked together in groups to design blueprints for animals that they think could inhabit a specific planet. The drawings will be submitted to Firefly and taken into space.

In creating their blueprints, the children learned about the solar system and the Milky Way Galaxy. They then broke into groups and each group learned about a specific planet and its characteristics. Using what they had learned about the planet’s terrain, atmosphere and temperature, the students worked together to sculpt an animal that they thought could inhabit the planet, school officials told Patch.

“We are so proud of how creative our students are,” Maria Aggen, on-site owner of the school, said in a prepared statement. “This project not only reinforces color and shape concepts and motor skills, also helps them to develop their 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.”

The learning doesn’t stop with the art projects. The School plans to continue education on space through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) learning.

“We have developed an entire curriculum around the children’s interest in the upcoming rocket launch,” Aggen said. “Our students have also done research about rockets, how high they go, and the Firefly company that is sending the rocket into space.”
