Dallas Stars Hockey Team To Train In Cedar Park

Team officials seek to emulate the community outreach of the San Antonio Spurs in by staging training sessions in other communities.

CEDAR PARK, TX -- The Dallas Stars hockey franchise will conduct a portion of its 2016 training camp in Cedar Park, according to team officials.

In an interview on Monday with the Austin American-Statesman, Brad Alberts, the Stars' executive vice president, confirmed the plans. The training will take place at the HEB Center in Cedar park, home to the Texas Stars team affiliated with the American Hockey League.

Alberts said the local training is part of a broader effort to pattern the team after the San Antonio Spurs basketball franchise, one of the most successful teams in sports history.

“We’re trying to build a franchise like that (in San Antonio)," Alberts told the newspaper. "We want to have a team that always contends and a team that builds the fan base with it. And that’s what we’re working for (on the NHL level) — what they’ve done in San Antonio.”

To that end, the Dallas Stars will be in Cedar Park for an entire weekend, from Sept. 23-25.

“We’re trying to grow hockey in Texas and we’re trying to become Texas’ team,” Alberts told the newspaper. “We want to use opportunities like this to grow more fans, and it’s important that we grow the game in Austin as well.”
