Here are the top three stories today in Cedar Park-Leander:
- On Apr. 21, the Leander City Council selected consulting firm Kimley-Horn's proposal of a $130,000 budget to complete the Old Town Master Plan. The city initially budgeted $75,000 for the project that is supposed to revitalize the historic town center. The council approved a zoning change in 2021, to allow more restaurants and entertainment in Old Town. Some residents want Old Town to become a "funky, artsy, pedestrian-scaled, historic hot spot, restaurant destination, organic, small businesses, charming, welcoming and a community gathering place." (Community Impact Newspaper)
- Yesterday, Apr. 29, Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) chairman Irv Blumkin said that "sales continue to trend above pre-pandemic levels even with supply chain issues, inflation, and consumers getting out more and spending on experiences." NFM is building a large new store in Cedar Park that is set to open in 2024. But inflation could hurt sales. Blumkin said that so far consumers are paying higher prices, but "it could be a challenge" if prices continue to rise. (Dallas News)
- The Cedar Park Police Department announced that a bat that tested positive for rabies was found at Reagan Elementary School, located at 1700 East Park Street. As of Apr. 29 at 5:45 p.m., there is no known human or animal contact with the bat. CPPD also advised the community to ensure their pets' rabies vaccines are up to date. If you come into contact with a bat, do not touch it and contact Animal Control at 512-260-4622. (Cedar Park Police Department)
