October Is Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month: Here's Why You Should Adopt

Leander's Central Texas SPCA hopes you'll consider adopting any one of their loving and deserving pups this Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month.

LEANDER, TX —In 1981, American Humane, an organization dedicated for over 100 years to ensuring the safety, welfare and well-being of animals, designated October as Adopt-A-Dog Month, to encourage the adoption of dogs from local animal shelters. Each year, shelters and animal welfare organizations from across the country observe October as an especially important month for amping up their efforts to match lovable dogs with loving owners.

A 2018 report from national database Shelter Animals Count, approximated 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year; of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs. The same report indicates each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized with 670,000 dogs among those included.

The good news? The number of animals euthanized in U.S. shelters reflects a gradual decline each year since 2011. Approximately 1.6 million shelter dogs are adopted each year. In large part, this is due to an increased awareness for adoptions and improved ways of reuniting strays to their owners.

Notwithstanding, there are dogs that wind up waiting longer to find their forever homes. Among the factors that impact how long a dog stays sheltered is the preference for puppies, small dogs, long coated dogs, and specific breeds. For Adopt-A-Dog Month, you're invited to visit your local shelter and consider adopting a deserving dog to add to the family. Central Texas SPCA located at 909 S. Bagdad Rd. in Leander, TX welcomes you to stop in for a visit and celebrate October by adopting any of their adorable pups.
