Support Group Offers Moms Breastfeeding Resources, Advice

Cedar Park new moms and moms-to-be are invited to a support group to meet other moms and learn about breastfeeding resources.

CEDAR PARK, TX — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the benefits of breastfeeding are broad-ranging for both infants and mother and is recognized as the best source of nutrition for infants as they grow and develop.

The CDC reports that breast milk changes to meet the nutritional needs of infants, and is helpful in protecting infant and mother against may short and long term illnesses and diseases including a lowered risk in infants of obesity, Type 1 Diabetes, sever lower respiratory disease, acute otitis media (ear infections), sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea/vomiting). For mothers, breastfeeding has been implicated in lowered risks for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure.

While understanding the myriad benefits breastfeeding has on infants and mothers, it's also important to know the ways in which a strong support system lends itself to improving the health of families. To offer a collaborative and consistent encouragement to mothers who breastfeed, Cedar Park Pediatric & Family Medicine hosts a weekly Breastfeeding Support Group held each Wednesday of every month.
