Virtual Concert Showcases African American Composers

Enjoy an afternoon learning about notable Black composers and their words within the classical music genre.

CEDAR PARK, TX —Enjoy an opportunity to learn about compositions from talented African American composers through the voices of Gene Clout, Kayla Harriott, Brian Major, Michelle Johnson, Governor Harris, Lauren Harris, Jadrian Tarver, Khyle Wooten and Van-Arc Wright. The musical landscape is filled with the talents of African Americans, however, Black classical music is often overlooked within the genre of classical music. Black Classical Muse: A Virtual Concert of African American Composers offers a fascinating look into the history and contributions of Black composers to classical music.

Notable 19th and 20th century Black composers such as William Grant Still, Florence Price, Hall Johnson and William Dawson are names not commonly recognized, however, their contributions left an imprint in the classical music movement. Dr. Dwight Andrews, Associate Professor of Music Theory and African American Music at Emory University will provide historical context for the virtual event scheduled on Sunday, June 7 from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is free for members and $7.00 for non-members.
