Williamson County Tornado Warning Expires, Strong Rains Continue

Leander officials confirmed a tornado touched down early Sunday, but the area was spared damage. Flooding still possible.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TX —An earlier tornado warning implemented for Williamson County has expired, officials said.

"The signature has weakened substantially and no longer appears to be at threat to life or property," National Weather Service officials wrote in an advisory. "We will be allowing the tornado warning to expire."

The Leander Fire Department and Williamson County Emergency management earlier confirmed that a tornado touched down in northwest Williamson County, resulting in only minor damage. An accompanying flood advisory also was canceled.

Forecasters had warned of accompanying penny-sized hail as a result of thunderstorms, urging people to move to basements or interior rooms in the lowest floor of a sturdy buildings while avoiding windows. Residents living in mobile homes were advised or who were in vehicles at the time were advised to head for the nearest shelter to protect themselves from flying debris.

Despite the tornado warning expiration, heavy downpours were expected in the region throughout the afternoon, potentially resulting in low visibility for drivers and flash flooding. Motorists should refer to the website ATXFloods.com to check low-water road crossings and avoid those areas.
