Lt. Scott Spencer, a spokesman with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, said the deputies tried to use less lethal methods to disarm the woman, but all of those efforts failed.
That's when the woman turned her attention toward a veteran deputy and came at him with the knife.
Spencer said when she refused to stop and drop the knife, two deputies fired their weapons, hitting her several times. The woman died at the scene.
Investigators said the woman had allegedly broken into several homes in the area recently.
Her identity has not been released.
The case is under investigation by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers.
