Here are the top three stories in Corpus Christi today:
- The Nueces County Courthouse in Corpus Christi has been plagued by a foul smell caused by broken sewage pipes. County officials plan to address the issue using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). An allocation of $1 million from ARPA funds is proposed to fix the pipes, with repairs already underway for the burst pipes and plans to replace other pipes showing signs of clogging. The Nueces County Commissioners will vote on the allocation of funds for pipe repairs on Jun. 7. (KRIS 6 News)
- Steve James, a teacher at Calallen High School, has retired after a 41-year career in education. James began teaching at the age of 26 and was inspired by one of his former teachers. Throughout his career, he taught courses in advanced placement government, U.S. history, and geography, finding fulfillment in teaching subjects that he believed were relevant to students' lives. As he embarks on retirement, James plans to pursue his passion for reading, fitness, and travel, starting with a trip to Portugal to explore European history. (KRIS 6 News)
- As Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer season, more people flock to area beaches and pools for a refreshing retreat. However, it's crucial to be aware of potential dangers. Familiarize yourself with the meaning of warning flag colors, such as green for calm conditions. Additionally, understanding how to handle rip currents is vital—remain calm, float instead of fighting against the current, swim parallel to shore when possible, and call for assistance if needed.
