Here are the top three stories today in Corpus Christi:

  1. Elena Flores started sewing in 2014, to make art, and to honor her late mother, as a hobby outside of her career in social work, but after taking classes and teaching herself in her Corpus Christi home, she began making T-shirts, clutches, jean jackets, and kitchen towels, all with a Latin American style and influence. Since then, she started Sew Bonita, a Corpus Christi business dedicated to handmade knick-knacks in that same Latin tradition. Flores said, "We're creating culture and community." (Texas Monthly)
  2. Corpus Christi's Catholic Bishop Emeritus René H. Gracida celebrates his 100th birthday today. Born Jun. 9, 1923, Gracida is the oldest living bishop in the United States. Gracida was ordained in 1959, and appointed as the bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in 1983 by Pope John Paul II. Gracida said, "That calling, to serve God's people, as a teacher, a healer, a friend in Jesus, a communicator of God's will by making his will known through his commandments and the teachings of the church, all of that has motivated me from the very beginning. This was a special calling that was changing my life." (KIIITV.com)
  3. City officials are looking at new ways to repair residential streets that have been in poor condition for quite some time. A five-year plan with a list of streets to be repaved will go to the city council next week. Public Works Director Ernesto De La Garza will be representing the new infrastructure management plan to city council members, and says residents can expect to see a lot of work crews in the coming months as the city turns to infrastructure projects to revitalize and repair public utilities like the roads.
