Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Kevin Phinney, your usual host for the Dallas Daily, is still out, and I'm doing my best to fill in for him. As usual, the newsletter digest may be lighter than usual.

Here are the top stories today in Dallas:

  1. CBSDallas/Fort Worth reports that the Dallas Independent School District superintendent issued a temporary mask mandate for all campuses. It goes into effect Aug. 10 and requires all staff, students, coaches and visitors to wear masks when on district property. The move defies Gov. Greg Abbott, who recently banned mask mandates.   2. Teresa Gubbins of CultureMap Dallas reports that Electric Shuffle, a bar with shuffleboard, chose Dallas for its first location in America. The bar will open in Deep Ellum at 2615 Elm St. (CultureMap Dallas)
  3. Ryan Salchert of Dallas Business Journal reports a flexible life science co-working facility called BioLabs at Pegasus Park plans to open in December. The facility includes both shared and private laboratories as well as training and office space. (Dallas Business Journal, requires subscription)
  4. Domingo Ramirez Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Austin Palmer, a former Dallas County sheriff's deputy, was indicted Monday on misdemeanor charges of official oppression and assault with bodily injury after authorities said he mistreated a man who was in custody during a prisoner transport two years ago.   5. Jacob Vaughn of the Dallas Observer reports Dallas has spent nearly $9 million in federal CARES Act money to help improve access to internet in the city. This comes as the city was identified as having one of the highest share of households that lack fixed internet access, at 42 percent. (Dallas Observer)
