2 Sought In Connection To Fatal Shooting Of Austin Homeless Man

A pair of 'persons of interest' are being sought for questioning stemming from the death of John Young, 60, at a bus stop in September.

AUSTIN, TX — Police are seeking two men dubbed "persons of interest" in connection to the death of a man who was fatally shot at a bus stop in September.

The incident dates to Sept. 16 just before 5:30 a.m. along the 6500 block of South 1st Street. Between the hours of 12:48 a.m. and 1:05 a.m., police said in an advisory that a 2020 Lexus NX 200 or 300 was observed driving along South 1st Street. Police described one of the men as having a thin build who was on foot.

Police said the pedestrian and the Lexus driver "...appeared to be moving in concert with each other," according to the advisory. Police released surveillance camera videos showing both the pedestrian and the car in question.

According to police, the men are wanted for questioning related to the death of John M. Young, 60, who was found at the bus stop with a fatal gunshot wound. Police noted at the time of Young's death that the man was experiencing homelessness, and was shot while he slept.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call them at (512) 974-TIPS; the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (512) 472-8477 (TIPS), use the new Crime Stoppers App, or email APD Homicide at homicide.apd@austintexas.gov.

Police stress that those submitting tips have the option of remaining anonymous. Tips also can be submitted by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, free on iPhone and Android.

Three videos from nearby surveillance cameras were released by police in the hopes someone might have information about the incident. One shows the car in question traversing the roadway along South 1st Street.
