📰 News we're reading

1. Austin Massage Academy accused of falsifying student records, forced to close (kvue.com) — State regulators have ordered Austin Massage Academy on Pond Springs Road in northwest Austin to close immediately, alleging it submitted false records that helped students obtain massage licenses. The emergency order also revokes the licenses of two instructors, and officials say some former students are now working without proper licenses at other massage businesses.

2. Austin airport gears up for Central Texas holiday travel (mysanantonio.com) — If you’re flying out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for the holidays, plan to arrive early and expect heavier-than-usual TSA lines and busy parking garages. AUS recommends 2.5 hours for domestic flights and three hours for international, with extra time for checked bags, rental car returns, or large groups. Travelers can reserve parking online through December 23 and even use a free gift-wrapping station after security.

3. Affidavit: Mom, 2 others arrested after leaving baby in car in 36-degree weather while barhopping on East 6th (kxan.com) — An 11-month-old was found alone in a car in 36-degree weather near East Sixth Street after three adults spent hours barhopping in downtown Austin, according to an arrest affidavit. Austin police say the baby was rescued with no obvious injuries, but the child was underdressed, pinned in an improperly anchored car seat, and left in what officers called a high-crime area.

4. Trustees discuss trust and transparency in Austin ISD's school consolidation efforts (cbsaustin.com) — Austin ISD leaders are refining their plan for next fall’s school closures and consolidations, while acknowledging strained trust and promising more community engagement. Families are urged to register through Enroll Austin, with a school ranking survey set for January and preliminary assignment emails expected in mid-February.

5. APD suspends officer indefinitely after incident involving intoxicated subject (cbsaustin.com) — Austin police officials have indefinitely suspended Officer Joseph Spees after an investigation found he used an unreasonable takedown on an intoxicated person and failed to de-escalate or accurately report the incident. The suspension, effective December 3, followed nearly a year of internal and external review, and the Austin Police Association says the case may still go before an independent arbitrator.
