Austin Community College Events Nov. 9-15, 2020
From celebrating mascot R.B. the Riverbat's birthday to getting a jump-start on college in high school, events abound at ACC.
AUSTIN, TX — The landscape may be slowed due to the coronavirus, but the Austin Community College district remains a hotbed of important academic activity.
Events and announcements for Nov. 9-15 include:
- Austin Community College almost doubles Open Educational Resources for students: New numbers show the number of OER classes at ACC jumped to more than 1,000 offerings in fall 2020. More than 20,300 students were served in fall 2020 compared to approximately 12,600 in spring 2020, saving students $2,034,000 in just one semester. OERs are openly licensed, high-quality course materials and are used in place of traditional textbooks. They’re free to students. More courses offering OER are expected in spring 2021. - Save thousands and get a jump start on college while in high school: Austin Community College hosts its third in a series of virtual information sessions on High School Programs, 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 14. Austin Community College has more than a dozen partnerships with local independent school districts to offer dual credit, Early College High School, and P-Tech. Students and parents can learn how to receive the college experience and college credit at little to no cost. For more information, visit the Austin Community College website.
- Austin Community College district's nursing program named Best of the Best for the third straight year: ACC’s Nursing Program is named 2020 Best of the Best among area nursing programs for the third year in a row. “It’s a testament to the caliber of our graduates and professors and their continued commitment to providing the best training for the future health care providers in Central Texas,” Austin Community College Chancellor Dr. Richard Rhodes said in a prepared statement. Voted No. 1 by the community in an online poll through the Austin American-Statesman, the program provides a pathway to become either a registered or licensed vocational nurse, all the way to earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing through the RN-to-BSN Program. - R.B. the Riverbat turns 10 years old: This year marks 10 years since the college unveiled its mascot — the Riverbat. R.B. the Riverbat represents the college’s mission and values and is the symbol that unifies all 11 ACC campuses, as well as the students, faculty, staff, and community. The college will celebrate his official birthday from Nov. 16 through Nov. 20 by asking the community to wear purple.
