Austin ISD Could Lay Off 230-Plus Teachers, Staff Members

As more parents keep their children home amid an ongoing pandemic, student enrollment is down by more than 5,000 students.

AUSTIN, TX — Teachers are bracing for potential layoffs at Austin ISD whose officials said this week furloughs may be needed amid dropping enrollments numbers, according to reports.

The revelation came during Monday's board meeing, when Austin ISD Chief Business Officer Larry Throm said student enrollment was down by more than 5,000 students, as KXAN reported. The upshot: The loss in nearly $50 million in lost funding for the district, based on average daily attendance numbers.

Should enrollment increases not materialize, more than 230 teachers and staff members could potentially be laid off, Throm said.
