With a minimum wage of $7.25, and an average monthly rent on a 1-bedroom apartment of $1,177, one needs to work 37 hours just to pay rent.
AUSTIN, TX — Austin is the least livable city in the nation for minimum wage workers, according to a new report.
In an increasingly unpredictable 2020, minimum wage earners in the nation's biggest cities are struggling to make ends meet as many young people are even moving out of bustling metropolises for the stability and space of suburban America, Move.org researchers found. For many, it's worth sticking it out in the cities they love — an increasingly elusive goal in ever-more-increasing Austin.
Against that backdrop, researcher found the state capital to be the worst for minimum wage earners, with a minimum wage of $7.25, and an average monthly rent on a one-bedroom apartment of $1,177. One would have to work 37 hours per week just to pay for rent in Austin, researchers found.
