Austin Police Operation Blue Santa Altered Due To Coronavirus

The continued need for physical distancing means officers won't be able to deliver toys and meals to needy families. But all is not lost.

AUSTIN, TX — Amid a record number of requests for assistance this holiday season amid a backdrop of the coronavirus, Austin Police Operation Blue Santa has been forced to alter it plans amid the pandemic. This year, the altruistic group will not be able to deliver toys and meals to families this year as it has historically done, officials said Tuesday.

But coronavirus won't be able to fully play its Grinch role. Police officials said gift cards will be given to participating families along with $25 gift cards to HEB to secure a nice meal. The Austin Police Department has been participating in the holiday initiative since 1972. Yet even after 48 years, many families are still in need of help, police officials noted.
