Austin Racetrack Opens As Shelter For Hurricane Laura Evacuees
Austin-area shelters hit capacity by early Wednesday morning, prompting opening of the Circuit of the Americas as makeshift rest area.
AUSTIN, TX — After Austin-area shelters reached capacity early Wednesday in receiving Hurricane Laura evacuees from the Gulf Coast, the ample Circuit of the Americas race track was opened as a makeshift, massive shelter, officials said.
Given the growing ferocity of the storm expected to make landfall as a Level 4 hurricane overnight, officials said shelters hit capacity by 5:30 a.m. By 10 a.m., the track reopened as a rest area for the remaining evacuees, officials said in an advisory.
Those seeking shelter from this weather event are welcome to wait at the facility while waiting for hotel rooms to become available, city officials said. Once confirmed, shelter rooms will be on a first come, first served. Evacuees will be provided with basic amenities while they stay at the Circuit of the Americas, officials noted.
